The Director's Corner
The Dogmatikon prescribed at Great Vespers on Saturday evening for this week is the following:
No tongue can speak of your wonderful childbearing, for the order of nature was overruled by God. You were revealed to be a Mother above nature, for you remained a Virgin beyond reason and understanding. Your conception was most glorious, O Theotokos! The manner of your giving birth was ineffable, O Virgin! Knowing you to be the Mother of God, devoutly we pray to you: “Beseech Him to save our souls!”
As in Dogmatika from previous weeks, this week we hear about the importance of the Theotokos’ birth; that her giving birth to God was “above nature” and “beyond reason and understanding.” Also, in this Dogmatikon we are reminded about important aspects of who we believe Christ to be; that He was born as a child from the Theotokos and is God. At the end of the Dogmatikon we encounter something within the text that is common in many liturgical texts in the Orthodox Church: an exclamation. Preceding this final exclamation, we hear attributes ascribed to the Theotokos that are mainly done in relation to what she has done for us; that is to say, she made it possible for God to enter the world to save us. Then, after we have in a way “defined” the Theotokos, we say, “Okay. Since you have such a unique relationship with our Savior, please, we ask you, pray to Him that He may save us.” This idea of rattling off many attributes of, let’s say the Theotokos (as in this example), or of a particular saint, and then either thanking God for giving us that person or asking that person to pray to God for us, is a common structure found in Orthodox hymno-graphy. To see another example of this all we have to do is have a look at the Troparion for St. John of Chicago. Next time we sing it at Divine Liturgy, listen to it, and notice how the text describes for us what St. John did: he “nurtured” his parishioners and “defended the faith.” Then, with an exclamation at the end, we give “glory” to God for His work through St. John.

Friends of Holy Trinity website launched
Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral has launched a new web site, www.friendsofholytrinity.com, to support the Cathedral’s multi-year restoration efforts. Separate from Holy Trinity's main web site ( www.holytrinitycathedral.net), the goals of this new site are to: - Increase awareness of the Cathedral’s historic and architectural significance,
- Serve as a primary method of communicating restoration progress.
The site features photo galleries of each major phase, historical perspective, and progress reports. Visitors can join a mailing list to receive updates and invitations to events, and download information on how they can support the project. The grant will help fund repairs to the roof and decorative metalwork. “Our parishioners have been very generous supporters of the Cathedral over the years,” said Council Vice President and Building and Restoration Committee Chairman, Charles Fetterly. “but the scale of restoration work requires substantial funding. It is our hope the new website will generate additional support not only from the entire Orthodox community, but also fans of Louis Sullivan’s work, the people of Chicagoland and beyond.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volunteers Needed
If you are interested in becoming a Lamplighter (one who helps light the candles, filling and lighting the lampadas), please see Theodore Kurtz.
We need volunteers for our Greeter’s Ministry, in which we are able to greet our visitors in a bright, Christian way: we get only one opportunity to make a first impression.
We need people to volunteer to be docents on Saturdays. This is a very important and successful ministry in which we are able to open our beloved Cathedral to visitors, seekers, and other interested people, sharing with them our Faith, and the Lord’s Temple.
For more information, please contact either Fr. John or Theodore.

Adult Discussion Bible Study - July 21
We will continue our Adult Discussion this Wednesday, July 21, at 6:45p.
One of the things we really need to understand is the fundamental foundation of our Faith. What better place to begin than by discussing the Nicean-Constantinopolitan Creed that we sing at each Divine Liturgy.
The basic tenents of the Faith are spelled out in plain, simple language.
Join in the discussion, and come along for the fun!
